Public workshops to be held on Carlsbad Energy Center
preliminary staff assessment

What: The staff of the California Energy Commission will conduct a two-day public workshop on the Preliminary Staff Assessment (PSA) for the Carlsbad Energy Center Project (CECP) proposal in San Diego County.

When: Wednesday, January 7, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Where: Sunset Ballroom/Conference Room, Sheraton Carlsbad, 5480 Grand Pacific Drive, Carlsbad, California

Why: The workshops will allow the applicant, staff, interveners, interested agencies and the public to discuss the PSA on the proposed 588-proposed plant. The workshops will cover air, water and soil issues, visual and traffic concerns among others. From the workshop dialogue and written comments received on the PSA, Energy Commission staff will revise the document where appropriate and publish a Final Staff Assessment in the second half of March 2009.

The CECP is being proposed by Carlsbad Energy Center, LLC for a 23-acre portion of the existing Encina Power Station (EPS). The natural gas powered CECP facility will feature high-efficiency technology that will be dry-cooled, eliminating the need for once-through ocean water cooling. If the CECP is licensed, EPS Units 1, 2 and 3 will be permanently retired.
