CALIFORNIA CLEAN ENERGY TOUR
ALTA WIND ENERGY CENTER

Alta Wind Energy Center is the nation's largest wind facility.

The Alta Wind Energy Center is located in the wind resource area at the Tehachapi Pass in Kern County. It is the nation's largest wind facility. At the end of 2013, the center is expected to have a generation capacity of 1,548 megawatts (MW), producing enough electricity to power 450,000 homes.

The electricity produced is sold to Southern California Edison through a 30-year power purchase agreement that was in place beginning in 2010.

Terra-Gen Power developed nine Alta Wind Energy Center projects and owns 720 MW of the 1,320 MW of wind energy capacity now online. The remaining projects are owned by MidAmerican Energy (300 MW), EverPower (150 MW) and Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners (150 MW). Terra-Gen also owns the 228 MW of wind capacity now under construction.

Benefits

  • When completed, the Alta projects will displace 59 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetime, the equivalent of taking more than 500,000 cars off the road.

  • The Alta projects help the local and state economy by providing:

    • Royalty payments of more than $30 million annually to Kern County farmers, ranchers and other landowners

    • Property tax payments of more than $40 million annually

    • State sales tax payments in excess of $200 million
