Beyond residential solar, which is witnessing phenomenal development activity, small commercial solar from 100kW up to utility scale solar of 10MW or more is experiencing its own robust development growth. This expansion, in turn, is stimulating a growing need for people who possess a working knowledge of how these distributed generation power plants are designed, operate and are connected into the existing electric grid.
This course is designed to provide a strong foundation of plant development and design concepts. It will familiarize attendees with the key elements of solar power plant design, including a detailed review of design criteria, component function and selection, along with thorough instruction on power flow through the plant and interconnection requirements.
Instructors will guide participants through site selection criteria, site preparation, PV module and solar plant components, racking systems, DC side systems and balance of system components, AC collectors and inverters and interconnection with the distribution utility as well as the with the power grid.

Ernst Camm, Principal Engineer, S&C Electric
Ernst Camm is a Principal Engineer responsible for providing technical support to customers and S&C's product and services divisions in various areas of power systems engineering, including load flow and voltage stability analysis, wind plant modeling and interconnect studies, transient and power quality analyses, distribution automation, and application of large-scale power quality equipment solutions. He has co-authored and presented various technical papers, articles, and seminars on power system voltage stability, dynamic reactive power compensators for voltage stability and wind plant applications, capacitor-switching transients, switching devices for mitigating transients, as well as power quality.
Ernst serves on various IEEE Working Groups and Task Forces on power system dynamic performance, and modeling of wind power plants and power system transients. He is the current secretary of the IEEE-PES Task Force on Dynamic Performance of Wind Power Generation. He holds a BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa and a MSEE from the Ohio State University.
Troy Strand, Principal Engineer, Ecomotion, Inc
Troy brings 24 years of solar experience to EcoMotion Solar Services. He's worked many sides of the solar business, from utility, to academia, as a solar developer, and now consultant. He's worked at Southern California Edison, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and was founder and chief operating officer of Independent Energy Solutions, a photovoltaic system designer and installer that specialized in military, utility and commercial installations. Among his other specialties are the design and installation of remote power systems, notably a large micro-grid for a remote Caribbean Island and for U.S. embassies in Africa.
Troy has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and over 24 years of experience in system design, engineering, and integration of complex photovoltaic power systems. Throughout his career, he has personally overseen the design and installation of hundreds of photovoltaic, energy storage, and micro-grid power systems in the U.S. and around the world.
Troy served on the board of directors for the San Diego Chapter of CALSEIA. He has published numerous technical and white papers. He conducted pioneering solar research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratories. He has also served on several standards and code-making committees for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the National Electric Code (NEC Article 690). He is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers and a member of the Vistage Chief Executive Group 12.
Johnathan Yu, Technical Trainer- Sales Engineer, SMA America
Johnathan is a technical trainer and sales engineer for SMA America in the Temple, Arizona office. He is an honors graduate of University of California, Davis and is fluent in both English and Korean.
