California's Energy Efficiency Standards for
Residential and Nonresidential Buildings
Title 24, Part 6, of the California Code of Regulations
The Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings were established in 1978 in response to a legislative mandate to reduce California's energy consumption. The standards are updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods.
Current Standards - Effective through June 30, 2009
2005 Standards - Went into effect October 1, 2005, and supersede the 2001 Standards. Projects that apply for a building permit on or after this date must comply with the 2005 Standards.
Adopted Amendments, Cool Roof Coatings Performance Requirements, Effective September 11, 2006.
2008 Standards - Effective July 1, 2009
2008 Standards Rulemaking - The 2008 rulemaking process has been completed.
The Energy Commission adopted the 2008 Standards on April 23, 2008, and the Building Standards Commission approved them for publication on September 11, 2008.
These new Standards will be in effect as of JULY 1, 2009. The requirement for when the 2008 Standards must be followed is dependent on when the application for the building permit is submitted. If the application is submitted after 7/1/09, the 2008 Standards must be met.
California's building efficiency standards (along with those for energy efficient appliances) have saved more than $56 billion in electricity and natural gas costs since 1978. It is estimated the standards will save an additional $23 billion by 2013.
The current 2005 standards and the 2001 Standards may be downloaded from the Web pages listed above, or to obtain a hard copy, contact the Energy Commission's publications unit at 916-654-5200.
