DRIVING TO CLEANER TRANSPORTATION
ALTAIR FUELS BIOFUEL PRODUCTION FACILITY

Powering the U.S. Navy with biofuels!

Once an active oil refinery, the facility AltAir Fuels retrofitted in Paramount, California now produces renewable diesel in addition to renewable jet fuel. Through the ARFVTP, the California Energy Commission provided a $5 million grant to AltAir Fuels to support the second phase of an expansion project that increased this facility’s renewable diesel fuel production capacity by 10 million gallons per year—making its current total refining capacity 40 million gallons a year, including renewable jet fuel capacity. This Renewable diesel is being purchased by a number of private and public diesel consumers, including the Department of the Navy to fuel their west coast operations including the Great Green Fleet.

The plant is also producing renewable jet fuel. In March 2016, United Airlines commenced deliveries under its agreement with AltAir Fuels to buy up to 15 million gallons of renewable jet fuel over three years, with the potential to purchase more, for its operations at Los Angeles International Airport. This is the first commercial-scale purchase of alternative jet fuels by a U.S. airline that incorporates biofuels into regular operations.

The AltAir Fuel project represents the first drop-in liquid biofuel project funded by the ARFVTP program. This is significant because drop-in fuels meet the same product specification requirements of the petroleum products they replace. As such, they can be stored, transported, and used without any change to engines or infrastructure. The expansion supported over 100 construction jobs and will continue to support an estimated 200 jobs both directly and indirectly in the bio-refinery operations, feedstock production, and material handling.

Benefits

  • Expanding current production of renewable diesel by 10 million gallons to 35 million gallons annually.

  • Expansion will support over 200 jobs directly and indirectly.

  • Facilitated the historic first purchase by the Department of Navy of renewable diesel for operational use, including their Great Green Fleet.

  • Facilitated United Airline’s becoming the first U.S. airline to begin use of commercial-scale volumes of sustainable aviation biofuel for regularly scheduled flights. United has contracted for up to 15 million gallons of renewable jet fuel over 3 years for use at LAX.
